us
It all started on the 10th of October, 2018 - modern love at its finest: a right swipe on Tinder. Niel and Shelly met at Yours Truly on a Wednesday evening at 6 PM. Naturally, Shelly was fashionably late. They planned for one beer (famous last words).
From the moment they met, it just clicked. This wasn’t your standard swipe-right situation. There was a spark, a deep-in-your-bones knowing that this was the start of something big. Which made it slightly awkward when, a few hours in, Shelly casually mentioned she was moving to the Bundus in 2.5 months for her community service year.
Despite all the sensible advice from friends (“Don’t do long distance with a girl you just met!”), Niel - ignored all of it.
And so began a year of long-distance magic: 1,600 km apart, monthly Durban meetups, 4-hour drives for Shelly, 2-hour flights for Niel, and memories that made it all worth it.
When the distance finally closed, they moved in together in Green Point. Enter: lockdown. Nothing like going from long-distance to no distance. But they didn’t just survive - they thrived. On 12 May 2020, Travis (the real boss of the household) joined the family and made their little unit complete.
Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of good food, spontaneous spoils, parties, belly laughs, big wins, hard days, and all the beautiful chaos in between. But through it all, they’ve had one constant: each other.
Then, on 19 July 2023, Niel - with trembling hands and a very real fear of the axe in Shelly’s hand (don’t ask) - got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.
Six months later, they packed up their lives and moved across the world to London. And now, with just 6 months to go until the big day - and nearly 7 years since that first beer - they’re getting married. With their nearest and dearest around them, they’ll celebrate the love that’s taken them across cities, countries, and every kind of adventure.
In short?
They’ve been worlds apart and traveled the world together. And no matter what life throws at them next, they know they’ve got this - because they’ve got each other.
